Fatigue cracks occur in rotor slot tooth tops primarily outside the snap ring groove. Cracks are caused by cyclical stresses acting on the tooth tops. This problem is not restricted to any particular style of generator or a particular manufacturer. It can be present on any rotor where the teeth are sandwiched between the slot wedge and the retaining ring.
Because of the variety of sizes, styles, design and manufacturer of generators, the extent of the damage varies; therefore, the solution varies. Some suggest the only solution is a long ring modification. A careful analysis of the extent of the damage may suggest a more simple solution. For instance, if the retaining rings are of the 18-18 type, the existing rings may be adequate.
When such a critical component is involved, a careful evaluation is necessary before any course of action is undertaken. REGENCO has the experts on staff to help you determine the optimal solution.
